Why Laughing Buddha Comedy? For 15+ years we've been providing new and aspiring comedians with the very best stand up comedy instruction in the heart of New York City. Unlike other comedy schools, we limit our class size to 10 -15 students and offer daily mics to practice, which any reputable school MUST do.

Our signature stand up class is a One Month Workshop (there is absolutely no need for a 6-week program or more).

Upon completion of your class show you will enter a diverse and vibrant community ready to support and embrace your new journey!

FAQS

  • We are comedian-owned and operated and feature small classes (never take a class with more than 15 people) and daily open mics for you to practice. We also have a diverse and supportive community since 2009.

  • Expect the unexpected. Each class and each instructor is entertaining, informative, and unique. Every student performs in every class. You will always be working on getting funnier, whether you're working on writing, performing, mic technique, hosting, or crowd work. Our instructors know how to get the best out of you.

  • Our classes are held in Midtown Manhattan conveniently located to all major trains.

  • We offer virtual classes on Zoom, as well as virtual one-on-one coaching for those out of town, and those who hate the rain!

  • Yes, actually all of our stand up comedy workshops, Storytelling, and some of our electives involve writing.  You will be taught by highly trained professionals who will help you punch up your jokes, tag and transition, sculpt and hone an original, and compelling set.

  • Yes, we offer private coaching and individual programs via Zoom.

  • Yes, it is very common for students to miss a class. It is not an issue; you can practice at our open mics or Zoom mics, and the instructor will do their best to ensure you don't miss a beat. Your class show date can be moved if you can't make the given date for your workshop.

  • Unfortunately we don’t offer refunds or exchanges, but it is extremely rare that someone might be unhappy with our classes.  We will do everything humanly possible to make sure that you are enjoying and benefitting from your workshop. If a class isn't right for you we will do our best to move you as we want you to be happy! Our doors are always open to your feedback.

  • The best way is to practice doing crowd work when you can, and of course take our Hosting and Crowd Work class which is very popular.  We have a mentoring program and numerous comics have started hosting at our open mics, and gone on to work professionally.

  • Stand up comedy can be a very challenging and lonely road.  Many of the gigs you will get will come from friends and peers.  We have worked diligently to provide an atmosphere that encourages friendships, professional networks and lasting relationships.  We offer social events, holiday parties, free workshops and more, where you can meet like minded comedians and form lasting friendships.

  • Laughing Buddha Comedy’s founder Jeff Lawrence seriously has no recollection about how he came up with the name. He practiced Buddhism, was born a Jew, and is basically non denominational. We have a very diverse staff and roster of comics. We welcome everyone, and our students come from every ethnicity, age group, race, color, religion, and sexuality.
